Paua (pronounced pah-wah) is a species of abalone (Haliotis Iris) which is found only in the cold, clear waters around
Aotearoa,
New
Zealand.
It is a marine
mollusc which clings to rocks at depths of between 1 and 10 metres, normally
along the shoreline. Paua shell is the most colourful
of all the abalone shells with tones that vary from greens and pinks to purples
and blues. The iridescence of the shell changes when viewed at different angles
with each shell unique in it’s hue and patterns.
The collection of Paua shell is managed in a sustainable way with a quota
system and strictly enforced regulations controlling the size of Paua taken. Paua divers can only
free dive to collect Paua, the use of air tanks is
prohibited. The shell is a by-product of the main reason for collecting Paua, it’s meat, which is a traditional delicacy for the
Maori. The shell has also long been used in Maori carving and artwork and its
use in jewellery and sculpture has become a distinctive feature of
New
Zealand
art.
Natural Paua uses only Paua shell of the highest quality. Each shell has its
own range of colour which makes each item of Natural Paua jewellery
unique.
Due to the nature of paua shell and the uniqueness of the designs, no two items of jewellery are exactly alike. Every effort is made to ensure that items delivered match the item's description.
